Stereo MC is important today. A popular English band is named Stereo MC. It is a hip hop band which has their own recording studio the Gee Street. Robert Birch the vocalist and Nick Hallam the DJ and producer founded the record label.

They came up the hard way. They actually traveled on buses with a whole lot of tapes in bags instead of a backing band. In fact, they started the band by selling their flat in London. They used the money to begin their endeavor.

Broadway and 4th eventually recognized the Gee Street and recorded the debut album of the Stereo MCs’ 33-45-78 (1989). They were supported by DJ Cesare, drummer Owen If and the singer Cath Coffey. The budget was very tight.

The year 1990 saw them release their first British hip hop single called “Elevate My Mind”. This was the first British hip hop single to go to the U.S. R&B chart. Back home, the indie dance scene that was emerging for Stereo MC.

Stereo MC also then tied up with the Jungle Brothers and released a lot of tracks like Supernatural (1990), and remixes such as U2, Queen Latifah, PM Dawn, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Electronic and Monie Love. These producers are still very famous. Most of the remixes by them are under the name of Ultimatum.

Their live band included singers like Verona Davis and Andrea Bedassie. They also played at rock music festivals which many of the bands do not.

The album Connected in 1992 is one of the best which also made to the No.2 on the UK Albums Chart. The album contained hits like “Connected”, “Creation”, “Step It Up” and “Ground Level”. These tracks won Stereo MC the BRIT Awards for Best Album and Best Group.

When music publisher Spirit Songs was started by Birch and Hallam, the status of rock star was confirmed by the Stereos by having taken an eternity to come out with the follow up of Connected. The reason given was that they did not want to come out with something similar as the previous one.

Remixes of “Frozen” by Madonna and “Jungle Brother” by the Jungle Brothers in 1998 was another landmark for this group. This confirmed that they were back in form and were still keeping alive in the hip hop arena.

In 2000, Stereo MC came out with a DJ mix of DJ-Kicks series for Studio K7. They also did another remix of a song for Madonna, called “Music”. Deep Down & Dirty was released in 2001. They then went on a tour which included slots opening for Jane’s Addiction, the band which was reunited recently. In 2005, Stereo MC released their most recent album called “Paradise”.

Stereo MC had a hard start with two of its members having to go through a lot of hardship to make an establishment. The band, with a lot of ups and downs, has carved a place for itself in the hip hop arena.

Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”, with its clay animation and brilliant use of colors, shapes and motion, is also revolutionary, even if the song itself is not as good as Michael Jackson’s.

This was before the days of technology such as high definition, 3D and CGI, yet it is as iconic as anything that has been made in the many years since. The video is a simple visual representation of the beauty and power of music. Of course this was more of a concert than a music video, but since their rooftop rendition of Get Back has essentially been made into a music video it merits inclusion in this discussion.

Another video which is perhaps one of the most important, even if not in any way technically “good”, is the one Britney Spears made for “Baby One More Time”. This video ushered in Britney’s decade long reign as pop princess and also kicked off the trend of boy bands and teeny boppers that would last well into the twentyfirst century. A stellar field of 16 new music videos fought it out in a highly viewed and voted contest last month on talent competition website MakeAStar.com, and the battle to win the title of Favorite Music Video for the month and the $100 cash was tight in every match.

But in the end it was the unique electronic sound of a band from Skopje, capital city of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, called Bei The Fish and their animated music video for the song ‘True Story’ that won the fans and judges hearts.

Fronted by lifelong musician Ognen Anastasovski with Gjorgjievski Nenad Tonkin, Valentina Minovska and Vladimir Nastevski completing the present line-up, Bei The Fish are a unique fusion of acoustic instruments and electronics with a distinctive air of their Mediterranean culture.  A leading light of quality pop music in their homeland, Vest proclaimed that “We should be proud to have such a band representing the modern Macedonian music outside our borders”.

“True Story” was directed by Georgi Unkovski, a Macedonian filmmaker currently studying in Rochester, New York.

The music video for “True Story” captures the angular, quirky and fun sound of the song through the meticulous filming process of stop-motion animation.

The band comes from the teenage dream Benzona and moved into something completely different. Bei the Fish is created by musician Ognen Anastasovski, graduated double bass player, who spends his entire life to the creation of sounds. Two young people join the band – Gjorgjievski Nenad Tonkin (the programmer, the brain) and Valentina Minovska offering voice of an angel. The musical structure is changing the framework, but these three are always at the heart of the band. This year, 2009, his performances are supplemented with the drummer Vladimir Nastevski who brings new energy and freshness to the musical style of the band.

The musical expression of the group represents a unique fusion of acoustic instruments, electronics and modern Macedonian and Mediterranean condiment, with a captivating nature of pop music. Thus, in 2003 the Macedonian music lovers were able to enjoy the unofficial album “Listen.” Music fans were surprised.
